The Water for Health Alliance, soon to be four years old, has demonstrated the effectiveness of co-operation driven by shared aims and the desire to improve public health.
From a small group of founding organisations the Alliance has expanded to a UK-wide partnership of 35 members.
However, in agreeing to work alongside Water UK in a public health partnership, stakeholders made it clear that they would only commit their time and energy through a delivery- and trust-based coalition. Partners felt they could achieve more without time-consuming committees, minutes and constitutions, without logos and subscriptions.
Since its work began in 2003 the Alliance has been actively supported and partnered by the regional water companies and has directly increased the availability of water and knowledge about good hydration in UK schools, care homes, hospitals, prisons, the workplace and in many public areas. This work continues, and is increasing in influence, pace and in the diversity of its reach. The power of a promise and a combined desire to succeed have proved to be a most efficient and effective combination.
