Government stands by the environment

04/06/10

In an ambitious manifesto, 'The coalition: our programme for government', ministers underline their commitment to pro-environment policies for a five-year term.

On water, the government says "We will examine the conclusions of the Cave and Walker Reviews, and reform the water industry to ensure more efficient use of water and the protection of poorer households".

The programme also sets out measures, including a commitment to "promote a huge increase in energy from waste through anaerobic digestion", where the water sector can play a big part in building a low carbon, eco-friendly economy.

Ministers can help both themselves and the environment - we are told there is true identity of interest - by exploiting the links between water efficiency and energy efficiency ('More efficent together' below). The reference to AD is particularly encouraging. Both areas should be items on an early agenda of the proposed cross-government departmental committee on the green economy, which is not a bad idea in itself.
