Water UK has given written evidence to the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee's inquiry into the Water White Paper which was published last month. Our evidence will be available on the Committee’s website shortly.
While we have been encouraged by the importance the government places on resilience, and the emphasis placed on catchment management and efficiency, we find it difficult to plot the philosophical arc which links this first half of the document, which envisages a holistic industry rooted in the communities it serves, with the second half, focusing on market reform, encouraging companies to be in competition with each other in order to win market share.
Water UK stresses the need for the Secretary of State to retain a clear role in the development of market reform in the water sector and also the importance of a step-by-step approach to avoid any risk to the sector’s current reputation for delivering the highest quality of water and wastewater services.
