Floods and sustainable urban drainage

29/01/08

In its evidence to the House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee’s inquiry into last summer’s floods, Water UK stated yet again that Defra needs to put sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS) on a statutory footing.

SUDS measures, such as filter drains, swales and detention ponds, have the potential to attenuate surface water flows and thus reduce flooding.

However, in contrast to Scotland, in England and Wales the effective use of SUDS is frustrated by the absence of legislation specifying responsibilities for the maintenance of such systems.
