The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee is playing its part in the debate about Defra’s Water White Paper - promised next summer – with an inquiry into future flood and water management legislation.
So far, Ofwat, CC Water, the Environment Agency and Water UK have given evidence and the Committee will hear from the Minister next week.
MPs regularly get letters from constituents about their drains, so there’s also particular interest in the transfer of private sewers. Committee Chair, Anne McIntosh, is especially concerned about Ofwat’s stance and how this will impact on customers’ bills.
In addition, the Committee’s inquiry looks at the Flood and Water Management Act to see what remains undone. Water UK calls for the speedy implementation of the proposals enabling social tariffs, and requiring landlords to give companies information on who at their property is responsible for paying the water bill.
