Water UK is deeply involved in work at European level because 80% of water industry activities are influenced by EU legislation. This is only likely to increase with a new Commission and Parliament in place in 2009.
European legislation can be considered in different ways: a major driver for PR09 and beyond, or an opportunity to amend past or current practices.
There are also synergies between Europe and the UK water industry in dealing with climate change. The challenge for the water industry is how to integrate the long-term issues that will influence the business with price reviews that offer a five-year window.
