CAP funds critical for water sector

30/06/11

Events in the first half of 2012 will set the course of EU water policy until 2020 and beyond, as the Commission starts to draw conclusions from its review of current water policy initiatives, although it is already signalling the importance of agricultural funding for water environment projects.

The conclusions, in the form of a water blueprint, are due to be published in December 2012.

In its approach so far, the Commission has emphasised the links between water and other EU policy areas, most notably agriculture. Its message has been unequivocal: water projects will need to secure funds via the CAP budget if some of the water sector's key targets are to be achieved.

To realise that objective will in turn mean convincing ministers with other portfolios, both nationally and at European level, of the need for funds to be allocated in such a way.
