After a long gestation period, and getting on for two years late, it now seems that the Environmental Liability Directive is about to be transposed into law.
The government proposes laying the necessary regulations before parliament in December, with a view to these coming into force in January next year.
The purpose of the directive and regulations is to require environmental regulators to recover remedial, complementary and compensatory damages from polluters who cause significant environmental harm by breaching EC environmental directives.
