DWI says drinking water 'up with the best'

27/07/09

The regulator's latest report on drinking water in England and Wales once again confirms the excellence of quality and compliance with EU standards.

In the Drinking Water 2008 annual report, DWI Chief Inspector Professor Jeni Colbourne applauded the industry for again achieving quality compliance of 99.96% and remarked that companies were supplying water “comparable with the best in Europe” and that “some regions are now almost fully compliant with the European Drinking Water Directive standards”.

This achievement, together with the 20% reduction in discoloured water complaints, is clear evidence of the benefits of companies’ capital investment programmes and their ongoing maintenance regimes.

Although there was a slight rise in the number of incidents, this was primarily down to some companies reporting intermittent findings of metaldehyde. These are now being addressed through catchment based strategies.
