The Chief Inspector of Drinking Water, Professor Jeni Colbourne, last week issued her reports on the quality of drinking water in England and Wales for 2007.
The reports show a continuation of the very high standards achieved by companies in recent years. Overall compliance with national and European standards was 99.96%, with some water resource zones and some companies achieving 100%.
As well as compliance, companies monitor the contacts from consumers, as a valuable indicator of the acceptability of drinking water. On the basis of these and other data the industry has invested heavily in the maintenance and improvement of networks which have made possible the high standards reported by the Chief Inspector.
