The government and Ofwat are both looking hard at the potential for extending competition in the water industry. Water UK has responded to Ofwat’s consultation and the call for evidence by the Cave Review on behalf of Defra and HM Treasury.
The response to Ofwat emphasises that opening up the water industry to greater competition needed to be done in such a way as to benefit all consumers; further, that changes should be undertaken incrementally in order to avoid expensive mistakes and the dislocation of services.
In response to the Cave Review Water UK supports Professor Cave’s emphasis on the government’s objectives for the water industry contained in its strategy document Future Water, and his recognition that competition is a means to an end and not an end in itself.
