Greenhouse gas emissions: industry can meet government aspirations

28/02/08

The water industry aims to contribute fully to the achievement of national emission reduction targets. To date there has been good progress: 13% of water industry energy needs met from renewable sources and much done to measure and report emissions.

Future Water sets out a vision for an industry meeting its drinking water, environmental quality and other objectives, while minimising greenhouse gases (currently less than 1% of UK emissions) and maximising renewable energy use and generation. This is sensible and achievable provided government, regulators and others play a full part in helping companies meet these ambitious goals.

Forward-looking regulation and removal of disincentives to renewable energy generation will be essential to ensure that the global environment is not harmed by improvements to its local cousin. We agree with Defra that the full price of carbon should be factored into decision-making at the earliest opportunity.
