EC sludge study and impact assessment

28/02/09

The European Commission’s long awaited study and impact assessment for the Sludge Directive has been launched and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The work should lead to revision of the 1986 Directive. The water industry welcomes this important step as the output should lead to assuring and underlining sludge use in agriculture as a continuing policy for the EC.

The project is in two phases: the first is expected cover broad issues such as sludge management practices and options; the second will involve environmental and health risks and impacts. There will be an associated economic impact assessment to help inform policy decisions on revision of the Directive.

The water industry looks forward to contributing to this important work on sustainable and efficient management and recycling of biosolids in agriculture.
