The European Commission recently consulted on a sludge and bio-wastes working paper, following responses to its Green Paper and discussions around the use of sewage sludge in agriculture.
The water industry supports recycling of all forms of biodegradeable waste so we can benefit from the organic material and nutrients that are available.
However, experience tells us that only proper regulation will ensure end user confidence.
The Commission proposes that the revised sewage sludge directive will cover all types of biodegradeable waste and both agricultural and non-agricultural uses.
This approach is to be welcomed, but for outcomes to be sustainable any proposals for restrictions on use must be practical and based on sound science.
