10th Annual Leakage Conference
Jack Carnell, Managing Director, South Staffordshire Water, chaired Water UK’s 10th Annual Leakage Conference. Held in Coventry, the day was an exceptional success with over 150 delegates attending the conference and exhibition
The central theme of the day focused on the impacts of the current price review, which requires capex and opex efficiencies over the next five years, and how a tough price determination would impact on longer term aspirations to reduce leakage in the industry. With a tough review anticipated, the silver lining is the drive to innovate that this will create.
Trevor Bishop, Head of Water Resources Policy at the EA set his thoughts on the future of leakage management and how in a changing world with the prospect of more frequent and severe droughts expected in the future, leakage will need to be driven down significantly.
David Duccini, Assistant Technical Director of Suez Environment gave his view of leakage management in Europe exploring political, regulatory and financial challenges; the physical loss of water vs non-revenue water and leakage control.
Several water companies presented their proposed approaches to leakage management over AMP5, stressing the importance of political, customer and environmental drivers in striving for further reductions.
The Met Office talked about how weather forecast and climate predictions could impact leakage and leak detection.
Other areas discussed included collaboration and innovation; the growing use of plastic pipes; research priorities; potential impacts of competition and water trading and the latest pressure management techniques.
