Water UK chief executive Pamela Taylor on the importance of an effective Water Framework Directive, at Water UK's WFD Conference.
"This obviously matters to us in the water sector. But we should recognise that the WFD also matters more to society and the economy than anyone has begun to understand. I know this is a big claim. But it’s also true. And here is another claim – maybe even bigger. An effective Water Framework Directive is essential for the continuation of civilised life as we know it in the face of dangerous climate change.
"Why is this true? Because civilised life depends on a secure water supply. And a secure water supply in the face of climate change itself depends on an effective WFD, in other words effective stewardship of the water environment.
"The water industry has shown convincingly that it can live up to its responsibilities in protecting and enhancing the environment. Now we must build on this success in partnership with others."
